Trakdot luggage tracker now shipping

Remember that luggage tracking device we did a hands-on with back at CES? Well, now you can finally get your own hands around it. Trakdot Luggage has just started shipping. The little box auto-transmits its location via quad-band GSM chip and triangulation, letting you know where your toiletries are at all times (except when you're actually in the air, naturally). Trakdot will run you $50, a price that includes a luggage tag and batteries (which should give you around two weeks of use). You'll also need to drop $9 for the activation and $13 for the annual service fee, if you want more than just a suitcase paperweight. And as for actually tracking the package, you'll have to rely on your parcel carrier for that information.

Chinese ex-politician Bo Xilai indicted on corruption charges

Disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai was indicted Thursday on charges of corruption, accepting bribes and abuse of power, state media reported, moving China's biggest political scandal in years toward closure.

The indictment paves the way for a trial, more than a year after Bo dropped from sight in one of China's biggest-ever political scandals.

The Xinhua News Agency said the indictment was handed over Thursday by prosecutors in the eastern city of Jinan to the city's intermediate court. That indicates the trial will take place in the city soon, although the report did not say when.

Bo, the former party boss of the southwestern megacity of Chongqing, was expelled from the party in September and accused of massive corruption, illicit sexual affairs and abetting the cover-up of a murder by his wife.

Bo's ouster in the spring of last year and the investigation into his family presented the Communist Party leadership with its ugliest public scandal in nearly two decades. It exposed the bare-knuckled infighting that the secretive leadership prefers to hide and affirmed an already skeptical public's dim view about corrupt dealings in the party.

The allegations leveled against Bo in September dated back more than a decade, including abuse of power, bribe taking and improper relations with several women ? banned by the party because they are considered an inducement to corruption.

Bo was also accused of involvement in the cover-up of his wife's murder of a British businessman, which was instrumental in triggering his downfall.

One of China's most ambitious and best-known politicians, Bo was brought down last year after a trusted aide fled to a U.S. consulate disclosing the murder.

Bo was dismissed as party chief of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

GM stock must nearly triple for taxpayers to break even

General Motors HQ in Detroit. The US government is divesting itself of partial ownership in the automaker after it bailed it out. But GM shares will have to nearly triple for taxpayers to break even.

The good news for shareholders is that General Motors shares are on a rise, gaining more than 25 percent in value so far this year ? and closing at $37.43 on Wednesday.

But that's not good enough for U.S. taxpayers who received 61 percent of GM's equity in exchange for a $50 billion bailout linked to the automaker?s 2009 bankruptcy. While the increase is likely to benefit the U.S. Treasury as it continues selling down its stake in the Detroit automaker, the latest report by a special federal watchdog cautions that GM shares would have to nearly triple ? to $95.51 a share ? for the government to break even.

?There?s no question that Treasury, the taxpayers, are going to lose money on the GM investment,? Special Inspector General Christy Romero told the Associated Press.

GM received $49.5 billion to complete its restructuring, a bailout initiated by former President George W. Bush in 2008 and completed by his successor, Barack Obama, in 2009 as the carmaker exited a managed bankruptcy. The White House also approved a bailout for GM?s crosstown rival, Chrysler, but only after Italian automaker Fiat stepped in and effectively assumed control.

The White House has said repeatedly that it has no interest in being in the car business. And it began selling down its stake in November 2010 when GM staged its initial public offering. Priced at $33 a share, it reduced the Treasury?s stake to 33 percent.

Late last year, the government announced plans to sell off the remaining stock by April 2014. That followed heavy pressure on the Obama Administration during the 2012 presidential campaign during which Republican candidate Mitt Romney said he would sell off the remaining stock immediately. Ironically, that would have been at a low point when GM was trading at barely $18 a share and such a move might have pushed losses on the sale to nearly $20 billion.

In recent months, as GM stock has rebounded, pushing part the November 2010 IPO price, the Treasury has accelerated its sell-off.

While some observers had worried that could actually hurt the stock price GM has been benefiting from other positive factors, such as the rebounding U.S. automotive market ? which is now approaching sales levels of 2007. GM also got a psychological boost with its recent return to the closely followed S&P 500 stock index. Because many funds are required to buy shares covered by the index, analysts believe that has boosted demand for the automaker?s stock, driving up its price.

As of June 6, the latest date covered by the Special Inspector General?s report, Washington still held 189 million shares of GM, or 14 percent of the outstanding stock.

To cover the outstanding balance as of that date ? a total of $18.1 billion, the government would need a $95.51 share price, the report noted. Were the stock to be sold at the price at that point of $36.61, it would still lose about $11.2 billion on the bailout. The escalating price could further reduce the loss but there are no indications that GM stock could come close to the point of a break-even, industry analysts warn.

The other maker to receive a bailout, Chrysler, has repeatedly said that it paid off the government in full for its rescue. That is partially true. The ?new? Chrysler that emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection has paid off the loan it received after the filing. But about $2.9 billion loaned to Chrysler before its bankruptcy filing was assigned to the ?old? Chrysler and written off as a loss.

Original Madden NFL designer awarded $11 million in EA lawsuit

Verdict in EA Madden IP Lawsuit ? Jury Finds in Favor of Original Madden Programmer

After three days of deliberations, a jury in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California today ruled in favor of Robin Antonick, the original designer and developer of Electronic Arts' (NASDAQ: EA) best-selling Madden NFL Football games, awarding him what should be, with interest, more than $11 million. It also gives him the ability to pursue the same claims against EA for games released after 1996-games with significantly higher revenues.

The case alleges that EA and Antonick signed a series of publishing and development contracts, culminating in a 1986 agreement that requires EA to pay him royalties on any derivative works related to the original version of EA Madden, including current annual releases, and prohibits EA from using his confidential information. The lawsuit claims that EA failed to pay millions of dollars in royalties owed to Antonick and to keep his work confidential as required by the contract.

The jury found that several of EA's games, published between 1990-1996, were virtually identical to the original version of Madden NFL Football, developed by Antonick, and used substantially similar plays and formations. With mandatory prejudgment interest, the verdict should entitle Antonick to more than $11 million.

"This is a tremendous victory," said Rob Carey, partner at Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP and one of Antonick's attorneys. "In many ways, this trial was a test of each party's version of events. The jury uniformly rejected the idea that this game was developed without Robin's work. It is, if nothing, a good omen for the next phase of the litigation."

A future phase of the trial will be held to determine whether EA is responsible for paying Antonick for games published between 1997 and the present, where revenues exceed $3 billion.

Antonick and his attorneys still plan to seek additional compensation during this stage of the litigation from the judge, who reserved for himself to decide claims for disgorgement of EA's profits. They will also seek to appeal previous rulings that excluded Super Nintendo games and fraud claims from the jury deliberations.

Today, the jury found that Antonick's game and the EA games shared substantial similarity in the plays and formations available to the user, and were virtually identical as a whole.

Antonick is also represented by Leonard Aragon of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, and Hagens Berman co-counseled with the Paynter Law Firm.

More information, including the full text of the lawsuit, is available at http://hb-ip.com/our-work/MaddenNFL.

White House slams House GOP plan for immigrants

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A White House senior adviser is accusing the House GOP of "cruel hypocrisy" for contemplating legal status for unauthorized immigrants brought to the U.S. as children ? without also legalizing their parents.

Dan Pfeiffer (FI'-fer) says over Twitter that the plan boils down to allowing some kids to stay while deporting their parents.

Pfeiffer's comment Tuesday comes as the House Judiciary Committee prepares to convene a hearing on what to do about immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children. House GOP leaders have endorsed a path to citizenship for some of these immigrants.

But Democrats and immigration advocates say that's not enough. They are holding out for comprehensive legislation offering citizenship to all 11 million immigrants here illegally, like the Senate has passed. Many House Republicans oppose that approach.
