A table at a boozy party I went to without my husband before we were married

People often ask me if ?things have changed? since my husband and I got married last year. And I don?t really know how to answer them. Because while not that much has changed in our relationship, a shit ton has changed in our lives. Well, actually, a shit ton has changed in my life.

See, before we got married, I was very social. Three-four nights a week included cocktails with girlfriends, boozy dinners, sometimes staying out late at house parties, and once in a while, smoking tons of weed. On weekends, yoga, shopping and pedis were often involved. My iCal was a sea of drinks, dinners, brunches and parties. Some nights I stayed up talking and laughing with friends until 4 am. On a weeknight!

Notice how I am saying ?I? and not ?we? when I am talking about all of these events? That?s because my now husband, who was always busy in his own right, wasn't with me during most of these nights out. No, I wasn?t sneaking around hiding my secret party girl life from him. We are simply different people who often enjoy doing different things. Without each other.

Don?t get me wrong: We really, really like each other. I swear. We just don't always agree the definition of "fun." And instead of fighting about our differences, we have a saying: "You do you." When I wanted to go out, I would go. If he wanted to stay home, he stayed. Though we were more than happy with this arrangement, and I actually think our marriage is better for it, my friendships seemed to be suffering.?

After our vows were exchanged, thank you notes sent, and the honeymoon pictures were posted onto Facebook, my friends kind of ... just stopped calling.

The single friends that were always around during the engagement period kind of tapered off. Even when I called them to make plans, it wasn't as easy to just get together for some reason. ?And my girlfriends who were in couples started have weird rules where they could only hang out without their significant other one specific night a week.

I started getting really depressed. Nobody was asking me to do anything anymore. Aside from one night when I drank six tequilas with my most awesome girls night girlfriend (who has been married for 100 years) and came home at 3 am, I was pretty much watching TV and going to bed at 10 pm. Snooze.

(Note: I refuse to blame my husband for this because if I don?t let his less social life hold me back, I really don?t it?s fair for other people to either.)

When I couldn?t find any Internet literature to solve my problem (save this Amy Sacco article from 2005), I started complaining to everyone I knew.

"Did I miss the memo?" I asked one of my friends, who as new mom, I thought might be able to relate. "Do married people not have friends?"

?Well who are your couple friends?? she asked.

That?s when it hit me. I did miss the memo. Couple friends? I hate couples and couple-y things. Something about watching my friends morph into completely different people just because somebody they happen to be in a relationship is around gives me the creeps. Plus, I have a hard enough time finding people I like ... now I am supposed to also like who they like? I do not expect anyone to do this for me.?

Call me naive, but I was completely unprepared for the marriage law that says in order to have a social life, you must join the couples cult, doing all social activities in pairs, and ensuring boys and girls never mix unless their spouse is there to keep watch over them.

"I'm not becoming a couples person" I said to a friend when I went to visit her (by myself) in L.A.?

"Sorry, but nobody wants a single lady hanging around," was her response.?

Even though I completely disagree (I love my single friends -- they are the fun ones), and even though I'm obviously not single, I knew what she meant. I was a free radical, floating around alone, threatening to wreak havoc on the perfectly wrapped relationships around me.?

Those hazy late night parties starting becoming more clear, as I looked back, remembering how people were always asking where my better half was. ?I used to brush them off. ??We aren't attached!? I would brag, swilling a third glass of wine. ?We do our own thing!??

Sometimes the reaction was "Cool!" Usually the response I got, though, was that the vagina half of the couple would grab her penis half a little bit closer and give me a look of pity mixed with fear. What was this? 1820 or whenever women needed male escorts (not those kind) in order to leave the house??

Any other couple-averse marrieds out there want to weigh in on this? Has this happened to you? I know being friends with other couples wouldn't kill me, it just doesn't seem like something that should be forced. Have any of you successfully navigated a social life post-marriage?

The next Competitiveness Council will be held on May 30th and 31st 2012. Fran?ois Hollande's government will be attending it for the first time. April calls upon the French president to take this opportunity to act against software patents and to bring up the flaws and the issues of the current unitary patent project.

Far from the European Commission's announcements, presenting it as a reform that will "foster competition", the draft regulation on the unitary patent is increasingly criticized because of the legal uncertainties it generates and because of its lack of compliance with the European institutions. Lawyers, large corporations as well as civil society have pointed out the dangers of this project: it grants most of the powers around granting patents to the European Patent Office (EPO), whose excesses towards software patents have been denounced for a long time by April. Such software patents are far from protecting innovation as they represent weapons towards economic war, only available to a few large corporations. These corporations therefore stop other players, including Free Software, from innovating and from offering their products. Furthermore, the organization of the new specialized patent court might lead to new abuses, since it will not be subjected to any control from an independent court, especially when it comes to deciding what is patentable and what is not. A limited number of lawyers specialized in patents would thus be controlling the entire patent system in Europe. The European Union would thus be waiving its jurisdiction in patent law to an non-EU body, without any democratic control.

Despite the insistence of many players including April who pointed out these dangers, both the European Commission and the Council have ignored criticism, even though solutions exist to create a unitary patent respectful of European law. A legal control by the European Court of Justice would be a simple way to ensure a minimal level of control and the application of European law. The European bodies, including the French government, must also look into the patent laws and redefine what is patentable and what is not. This observation is even shared by Fleur Pellerin, the French Deputy Minister responsible for SMEs, for innovation and for the digital economy. She has clearly expressed her opposition to software patents during the French presidential campaign and she has pointed out the dangers within the current project of unitary patent in her answer to April's Candidats.fr questionnaire: "The European bodies, from which stem most of the innovation policies within Europe, should be recognized a greater power than they are today".

"With this first Competitiveness EU Council, the French president and the government have a unique opportunity to act against software patents and on the legal uncertainties that threaten Free Software as well as many companies, especially SMEs and SMIs, by preventing them from innovating" says Lionel Allorge, April's President."An overhaul of the entire European patent system is essential to avoid getting into a situation similar to that of the United States, in which millions of dollars are wasted because of an out of control patent system, and to ensure a democratic control over the patent system"

April calls upon Fran?ois Hollande and his new government to act against software patents by improving the unitary patent project currently being discussed within the European institutions so that it guarantees the balance of power and legal certainty for companies. April would like to offer its help in achieving that goal.

We’re here in New Orleans on the eve of CTIA, and Verizon has the next star in their lineup on-hand. The Droid Incredible 4G LTE made its rounds tonight, and from our short but sweet time with the device, we really like what we see. The next-gen Incredible is what would happen if the Droid line mated with the One line: quality HTC hardware with Verizon’s signature touch.

It would be simple to compare the new Incredible to the One S, but despite the similarities, the two are quite different and independently unique in their own right. Sure, they share the same display technology, the same processor, and the same user experience, but aesthetically, the two phones are quite different. Where the One S draws its ooohs and aaahs from its svelte physique, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE makes no apologies about its heftier footprint. If you’re familiar with the first two Incredibles, you’re going to feel right at home here. While they don’t pretend to be the most beautiful devices on the market, they certainly have a charm that’s hard to deny. The textured back, the chromed bezel, and even the 4-inch qHD display isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it adds up to a nice experience.

Internally, it’s pretty clear that Verizon has gotten its hands on HTC’s latest and greatest technology. We’ve got a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, along with a full GB of RAM and 8 gigs of internal storage. The Droid Incredible 4G LTE’s got Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, which translates to the same experience we fell in love with on the One line. Sense 4.0 is like butter on top of Google’s latest OS. It’s fluid, it’s fast, and it looks absolutely stunning. I’ll go on record tonight and say that Sense has made some honest to goodness improvements to Android 4.0.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the main difference between the Incredible and HTC’s flagship devices: the camera. The Incredible lacks HTC’s ImageSense technology, though Verizon says that this camera is respectable in its own right. Regardless, we think its kind of a drag that Big Red customers are going to miss out on one of the best smartphone camera experiences on the market today.
