In Chicago, Obama rallies Dems and donors for 2014

CHICAGO (AP) -- Returning to the town that launched his political career, President Barack Obama gave a boost Wednesday to Democrats chasing control of the House, telling donors he's still seeking compromise with Republicans ? but if that fails, it's up to Democrats to finish the job.

Joined by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, his former chief of staff, at a glitzy hotel in downtown Chicago, Obama cast his days of politicking as behind him ? "I've run my last political race." But he portrayed a renewed Democratic majority in Congress as the best insurance policy against a GOP determined to stand in his way.

"Washington is not broken," Obama said. "It's broken right now for a particular reason, but it's not permanently broken. It can be fixed."

That's where Democratic donors and the candidates they support come in, Obama said.

About 150 supporters, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, attended the reception, where tickets started at $1,000 per person.

But the big bucks awaited Obama and his party at the home of Bettylu Saltzman, whose support for Obama started decades earlier when he was first entering politics in Illinois. Tickets to dinner at Saltzman's home started at $10,000 and topped out at $32,400 ? the legal maximum.

"I can honestly say I probably would not be president today without Bettylu Saltzman," Obama said. "Love that woman."

For all the allusions to challenges unmet and work left undone ? infrastructure spending, expanded pre-kindergarten and gun control among them ? there was little sense of a Democratic base that's given up hope. Indeed, Obama acknowledged at one point that he was preaching to the choir.

"We've got kind of an Obama cabal here in this room," he said to laughter in the sleek, white apartment in an upscale Chicago neighborhood.

At his first stop, Obama even lent his singing voice to the cause, leading a chorus of "Happy Birthday" for Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., the chairman of the campaign committee.

All told, Obama's events Wednesday were likely to bring in almost $1 million, at a minimum, for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Obama's trip to Chicago marked the latest stop on an aggressive fundraising tour that started soon after his re-election and will continue up until the 2014 midterm elections. Although eager to protect their fragile Senate majority, Democrats' top prize would be the House and returning the gavel to Pelosi.

"I could not be more anxious or eager to have her back as Speaker of the House," Obama said as the California congresswoman beamed.

Democrats need to gain 17 seats to recapture control of the House next year. It's an ambitious goal, Democrats and Obama acknowledge, considering the president's party typically loses seats during the sixth year in office.

But after spending half a decade in the minority, confounding Obama's efforts to push his legislative agenda through Congress, Democrats have resolved to try. They're eyeing potential pickups in places like Florida and Texas and courting moderate, outsider candidates they believe they can sell as more pragmatic than incumbent Republicans.

Although criticized by some in his party for doing too little to help the cause in his first term, Obama has shown himself to be a formidable fundraising force. He raised $3.25 million for House Democrats last month at fundraisers in San Francisco ? among the 20 or so events Obama has agreed to headline ahead of the 2014 elections for House Democrats, Senate Democrats and the Democratic National Committee, which is still retiring debt the party racked up helping Obama get re-elected last year.

First lady Michelle Obama got in on the action Wednesday, too, raising cash in Massachusetts for a Democrat running in a special election for a Senate seat, then dashing off to New York for a pair of fundraisers for the DNC.

At one event along Central Park, the DNC's annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender gala, Mrs. Obama was joined by singer Sara Bareilles and by NBA player Jason Collins, who the president praised effusively in April after he became the first active player in one of the four major U.S. pro sports leagues to come out as gay. About 350 people attended, with tickets ranging from $1,250 to $32,400.

Obama's Chicago stops also attracted a number of protesters, whose muffled chants could be heard as he arrived at the hotel for the first event. Groups that had planned protests near the fundraisers included anti-abortion activists, environmentalists urging Obama to nix the Keystone XL pipeline and immigration advocates opposing deportations by the Obama administration.

Congress demands answers on Google Glass privacy concerns

A letter from eight lawmakers poses a series of questions about Google Glass, the forthcoming Google spectacles.?

By Matthew Shaer / May 17, 2013

Google founder Sergey Brin poses for a portrait wearing Google Glass before the Diane von Furstenberg Spring/Summer 2013 collection show during New York Fashion Week in this September 9, 2012 file photo.

Tester units of Google Glass are here. And so are concerns about privacy ? not particularly surprising, considering that the Google goggles could allow folks to surreptitiously snap photos that people would prefer they didn't snap at all. (See also: "Blinky," the wink-powered Glass app.)

As ABC News reports today, the latest line of questioning comes from the members of the?Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, who are seeking details on Google's new hardware.?

"As members of the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, we are curious whether this new technology could infringe on the privacy of average Americans," reads a new letter sent by the group. "Because Google Glass has not yet been released and we are uncertain of Google's plans to incorporate privacy protections into the device, there are still a number of answered questions that we share."

The lawmakers go on to outline a series of questions, including the following: "What proactive steps is Google taking to protect the privacy of non-users when Google Glass is in use?" In other words, how exactly will Google stop Glass owners from taking creepshots??

Google, as it happens, has already started to address these queries. At a panel at the big I/O developers conference out in San Francisco, Google reps stressed that Glass was designed to make it obvious that the device is in use ? for instance, when its turned on, the small display on the glasses lights up.?

"If I'm recording you, I have to stare at you ? as a human being. And when someone is staring at you, you have to notice," Google engineer Charles Mendis said this week at I/O, according to The Verge. "If you walk into a restroom and someone's just looking at you ? I don't know about you but I'm getting the hell out of there."

Google Play Services gives control of Android back to Google

Google Play Services

With API services outside of the core operating system, Google is taking back control of Android

We didn't get a new version of Android this year at Google I/O. You can read all the lamenting and gnashing of teeth over this across the web, so I'll spare you the play by play of how it was supposed to happen (a proverbial lock), but didn't.

Instead, I'll tell you a little bit about what we did get -- a huge updated version of Google's service APIs, which turns out is much better.

Wait. Better? How can an app I never wanted that got magically pushed to my phone be better than a newer, higher number in my about phone screen? That's crazy talk, right?.

Turns out, that little app is a powerful beast. Read on.

Dinner with a real African Princess | Rowan Family Tree

The exotic life I lead! In just a couple of weeks I will be back to the African continent again, except this time to the sun and spices of Morocco.
20130517-101718.jpg

I applied to speak up the World Environmental Education Congress back in the fall, not knowing if they would actually accept my application or not. In fact, I submitted two papers, in hopes that one would be accepted. Well I should?ve known? Murphy?s Law. Both were excepted! And so in a couple weeks I amoff on a whirlwind one-week trip to Marrakesh.

It?s been 16 years since I was last in Morocco. The last time I was staying in three dollar a night hotels, with questionable locations and the occasional bedbug. Not that I?ve become so fancying any year since, however I think that I will for myself at least $50 a night this time.

Morocco, to my recollection, was one of the most wonderful places I visited in the world. I can?t wait to go back.

20130517-101707.jpg

20130517-102553.jpg
The design! All the amazing Islamic architecture with the repeated patterns and tile work. The leatherwork, the fabrics, the carpets! And of course? The best part is the food. I have never been anywhere in the world that is as fragrant and exotic has Morocco. Of course I haven?t been to India! But, the smell of the souks in the spice markets are forever emblazoned on my brain. I?m looking forward to eating pigeon and tangine and pistachios and all sorts of delicacies. Although I actually lost several pounds in Ethiopia, I can guarantee that I will be coming home for Morocco a little bit rounder. Which is unfortunate, because I have to fit into a ball gown at the very end of the week.

Super cool! I get to have dinner with the real African princess: Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco. She is the chair of the prince?s environmental charity, and is hosting a formal evening in ancient Moroccan ruins outside that I get to attend into splendid formal attire. Dinner with the real African princess? It doesn?t get better than that.

20130517-101658.jpg

Of course it goes without saying that I am looking forward to learning in hearing some of the amazing speakers as well. Some people I?ve only met through videotape will be there in person. And I expect, and I will meet some old acquaintances from other conferences as well.

In case you?re interested, I?m presenting on two topics?

Communities of Practice for Green Economy Entrepreneurs: Learning Together and Building a Subculture?s Identity

Sometimes it isn?t easy making a living by being green; however with informal learning communities, eco-minded entrepreneurs interact and improve their business practices. This presentation identifies the learning roles entrepreneurs can play in a green economy, the community?s collective benefits and ways to strengthen the interactions between community participants. Real-life examples from a small Canadian city highlight aspects of knowledge creation, shared values, tribal communications and practical acumen.

Integrating Sustainability Across the Higher Education Curriculum: A Systems Approach for Institutional Deep Change

This session explores the barriers to educational reform within higher education institutions, why traditional organizational change models don?t work, and best practice workarounds from inside and outside the sector. Barriers include traditional discipline silos, missing fundamental sustainability knowledge, a lack of social connectivity and norms between instructors and the power dynamics of the academic system. A whole system approach is suggested to address the decision making processes and communication flows unique to higher education.

Sports insurance and Sports National Governing Bodies.

I encountered a paper from BMJ recently on the topic.
http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/25/1/21.full.pdf

It's full of interesting factoids:

"Information on 36 of the 39 sports surveyed (92%) was sufficient for analysis. Twenty-two of these 36 sports
(61%) organized insurance at a national level, one at club level (3%) and 13 (36%) provided no insurance advice. Only 12 sports (33%) insisted on mandatory insurance cover. Many sportsmen and women are left to search for an appropriate insurance cover themselves or remain uninsured. Owing to the lack of advice in 36% of cases it was decided to survey ... insurance brokers to establish what type of policy they would recommend. Only 41% of the brokers were able to offer a suitable policy. Club policies recommended by the Central Council for Physical Recreation provide individuals with the same sports cover (but at a lower premium) as is available from a personal accident policy. However, cover is somewhat inadequate and may provide a false sense of security."

They give lots of info about which sports end up in which hospital department amking up what share of the workload, and then finish, saying:

"We feel it would be a responsible action of the national governing bodies of sports to make insurance mandatory at club level. This would provide support in the event of sports-related disablement for
members who would not otherwise be insured. We believe that all governing bodies of sports for Wales
should organize a suitable and adequate insurance policy to be taken out at club level on behalf of
members and that the premium be included in the dub membership fee. At present only a handful of
sports, seven of 36 (19%), have such a policy"

Google reportedly signs deal with Sony and Universal ahead of launching music streaming service

Google reportedly signs deal with Sony and Universal ahead of launching music streaming service

Sure, Google I/O may not focus on new products, but it might just take a moment to unveil the firm's take on music streaming. According to The Verge, Mountain View has inked licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment for YouTube and Google Play. With Fortune having reported that a similar deal with Warner Music Group is already in the can, it's entirely possible that the search titan could reveal its Spotify-like service at the developer event, as it's reached a critical mass of sorts with major music labels. Page & Co.'s dev shindig may not have skydivers this year, but on-demand music may be on the program.

BT hopes to launch ownbrand 4G mobile service in 2014

When BT purchased nearly £200 million worth of 4G spectrum, the prevailing opinion was that it would remain a behind-the-scenes player. CEO Ian Livingston, however, might have grander aspirations for his company's 2.6GHz property. In an interview with The Telegraph, he said that it was "highly possible" that we'd see BT-branded 4G SIM cards next year, bundled along with the company's TV and broadband services. He also spoke of upgrading existing BT WiFi hotspots to provide 4G access, which would reduce the cost of 4G compared to its premium-priced rivals.

Analysis: Syria peace talks look doomed in advance

By Alistair Lyon

LONDON (Reuters) - If anyone saw last week's U.S.-Russian agreement to convene a peace conference on Syria as a potential breakthrough, Western leaders have been going out of their way to disabuse them.

International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi hailed the plan as the "first hopeful news" on Syria in a long time and deferred his own plans to resign after nine months of futile mediation.

He called the proposal "only a first step". But even its sponsors are dampening expectations that a civil war estimated to have killed 80,000 people can be doused soon, and pitfalls they cite in public are only a few of those lying in wait.

"I'm not promising that it's going to be successful," U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday. Obstacles include Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah, both of which support President Bashar al-Assad, as well as the al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front on the rebel side, he added.

Obama did not mention chronic disunity in the ranks of the Western-backed opposition or its almost complete lack of control over the now mostly Islamist insurgent forces on the ground.

Once "the furies have been unleashed ... it's very hard to put things back together", he said.

Syria has descended into a ferocious civil war, whose sectarian dimension was illustrated at the weekend by a video showing a Sunni Muslim rebel commander cutting out and biting into the heart of a slain Alawite soldier.

The United States and Russia share interests in Middle Eastern stability and in curbing Islamist militancy, but remain far apart on how to pacify Syria and shape its political future.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who opposes foreign military intervention or arming the rebels, said: "It is extremely important to avoid any actions that could aggravate the situation."

The conflict is complicated and fuelled by regional conflicts, some with sectarian overtones, such as the struggle between Sunni heavyweight Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Iran.

"MANY DIFFERENCES"

Moscow, which has shielded Assad diplomatically since mostly secular peaceful protests against him erupted in March 2011, has long echoed the Syrian leader's line that what later turned into an armed revolt is the work of foreign-backed Islamists.

Russia says Assad's survival in power is not its goal, but insists his removal must not be a precondition for talks.

A Russian official said at the weekend there was broad agreement that the Syrian crisis was dire, "beyond that there are very many differences: who can take part in this format, who is legitimate and who is not legitimate".

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius questioned whether the Geneva talks aimed at creating a transitional government that would take over Assad's powers would even happen.

"I'm supporting the 'Geneva 2' talks, but it's extremely difficult," Fabius told RTL radio on Tuesday.

Tentative cooperation between Washington and Moscow might help - Brahimi's predecessor Kofi Annan quit last year in frustration at the diplomatic paralysis caused by big power divisions - but even acting in concert they might be impotent to staunch a conflict already spilling over to Syria's neighbors.

It remains to be seen if they can cajole their deeply skeptical Syrian allies into joining the Geneva negotiations, whose earliest timing has now slipped from May to early June.

The main opposition coalition, backed by Western and some Arab states, meets in Istanbul on May 23 to decide its stance. Previously it has demanded Assad's exit before any talks, but Washington now seems ready to leave his future to negotiations.

A French official, who asked not to be named, said rivalry between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the two main Arab sponsors of Assad's enemies, was hampering the emergence of a credible new opposition leader with a mandate to negotiate.

"It's vital that they get someone that could be at the table," the official said. "They know that continuing disunity among the opposition doesn't work. It's not just about Assad, the Free Syrian Army and the Islamists - the Syrian people need to be represented politically by the opposition."

Jordan said on Tuesday that it would host a meeting next week of the rebels' allies in the "Friends of Syria".

"GROSS MISCALCULATIONS"

Assad himself, buoyed by military gains against rebel strongholds in recent weeks, seems determined to cling to power.

Information Minister Amran Zoabi said Assad's leadership role was a decision "only for the Syrian people and the ballot box". He said Syria wants specifics on the Geneva talks before deciding whether to attend.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said staying away would be "another one of President Assad's gross miscalculations", but added: "I don't believe that that is the case at this moment. The Russians, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has already given him the names of people who will negotiate."

Western powers want to step up pressure on Assad to hasten his fall, but have no appetite for the huge risks and costs of direct military intervention and have stopped short of arming fractured rebel factions, who now seem on the back foot.

Although France and Britain want the European Union to ease its weapons embargo on Syria to allow some arms supplies to rebels, it is hard to imagine how this would swiftly swing the military balance against Assad, whose forces are bolstered by Russian hardware and help from Iran and Hezbollah.

Nor is it clear that arms sent to those rebels Westerners see as moderates could dent the influence of the Islamist militants now spearheading the struggle - and spreading alarm in neighboring states Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Israel.

The devastating conflict in Syria, now well into its third year, may have prompted a new international initiative. But the talks would only be a start, as the French official made plain, saying: "Let's be clear, even if we do have this conference, it doesn't mean there will be peace in Syria."

Hands-on with NVIDIA Shield: NVIDIA's project turned product

Handson with NVIDIA's project turned product, NVIDIA Shield

NVIDIA's Project Shield now has an official name (NVIDIA Shield), a release window ("by the end of June") and a price tag ($350). That's a full $100 more than the PlayStation Vita -- arguably the most competent competition for Shield's hardcore skewing demographic -- and even a smidgen over the cost of various full-on game consoles. Despite the high barrier to entry, NVIDIA tells us Shield will follow the same annualized model that its mobile phone counterparts do: a new internal upgrade each year to keep up with the times. And we already know what that future looks like. Given all that baggage, we can't help but approach our last hands-on before launch with an eye toward whether or not this is a worthy purchase. Is NVIDIA's Shield worth getting in on early?

Hubble tells a tale of galactic collisions

May 12, 2013 ? When we look into the distant cosmos, the great majority of the objects we see are galaxies: immense gatherings of stars, planets, gas, dust, and dark matter, showing up in all kind of shapes. A new Hubble picture registers several, but the galaxy catalogued as 2MASX J05210136-2521450 stands out at a glance due to its interesting shape.

This object is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy which emits a tremendous amount of light at infrared wavelengths. Scientists connect this to intense star formation activity, triggered by a collision between two interacting galaxies.

The merging process has left its signs: 2MASX J05210136-2521450 presents a single, bright nucleus and a spectacular outer structure that consists of a one-sided extension of the inner arms, with a tidal tail heading in the opposite direction, formed from material ripped out from the merging galaxies by gravitational forces.

The image is a combination of exposures taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, using near-infrared and visible light.

Subtitles Automatically Downloads Subtitles for Movies on Your Mac

OS X: We've shown you how to download subtitles for movie files on your computer through services like Opensubtitles or Subscene, but Subtitles for Mac makes the process as simple as dragging and dropping a video file.

Once you open the app, just drag a video onto the clapperboard. Assuming the file name is a near enough match for the title of a known movie, Subtitles will automatically query the Opensubtitles database and download a matching .srt file into the same directory as the video file. It's not doing anything magical; you could find the same files yourself if you wanted without too much trouble, but this will save you a bunch of time if you're updating a large video library.

If you want to play the video through XBMC or VLC, you're good to go, but you can also use Handbrake as described in our guide to embed the subtitles in your video file for viewing on other devices.

Must See HDTV (May 6th - 12th)

It's spring / season finale time, and as the temperatures rise outside the TV shows we've been watching all winter are starting to fade away. Meanwhile, the NBA and NHL playoffs are just starting to get good with plenty of interesting matchups to be found. Finally, Gamer hits shelves this week, the first of post-converted 3D Blu-rays created due to a deal between Lionsgate and Samsung. Look below for the highlight this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Season four of this comedy wraps up this week and NBC has not indicated whether or not it will be returning for another semester. Unfortunately, even as fans of the show, watching this last season go on without creator Dan Harmon has us wondering if coming to an end now is actually the better option (remember Heroes?) Of course, we're still in for six seasons and a movie, so we'll see what happens.

Starz, Encore and Movieplex Play apps arrive on Android

Starz Play has had a home on iOS since October, but now it's made the jump to Android, and it's brought Encore Play and Movieplex Play along with it. By wielding the apps, users can stream video from the TV network over WiFi and 3G -- provided they have a cable subscription with AT&T U-verse, Cox, DirecTV or Verizon. Comcast customers aren't entirely left out in the cold, however, as they can already catch content licensed from the television channel through the Xfinity website and apps. If you're ready to get your fill of Starz flicks, hit the bordering source links for the downloads.
