Cervical cancer has recently become a concern among women all over the world. It is considered the second largest cancer killer among women across the globe especially in developing countries and Botswana is not an exception. ?

According to the Department of Health and Human Services ?USA there are five main types of cancer that affect a woman?s reproductive organs cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and cervical cancer is on the lead. Cervical cancer?occurs when abnormal cells on the?cervix??grow out of control. The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus. It connects the vagina to the upper part of the uterus.

According to Dr Osone, there are various causes of cervical cancer ranging from smoking, hormones, infections (human papillomavirus), sex- this is because cervical cancer is common in sexually active women than in virgins, becoming sexually active at an early age also makes women to be prone to cervical cancer. Women with multiple sexual partners are also at a high risk of getting cervical cancer.

According to emedicinehealth if a woman experiences the following symptoms she should visit a health facility, as these symptoms needs to be investigated by a medical practitioner:

?? Vaginal bleeding after menopause is never normal

?? Heavy bleeding during a woman?s period or frequent bleeding between periods

?? Bleeding after sexual intercourse

?? Abnormal vaginal bleeding that is associated with weakness, feeling faint

There are several other symptoms that also need a medical check if experienced such as pain in and around the vagina when having sex, an unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge, pain when passing urine.

The Pap smear test, which screens for cervical cancer, is one of the most reliable and effective cancer screening tests available. Women are encouraged to undergo a pap-smear exam annually because cervical cancer is the easiest cancer to prevent. According to Centers for Disease Control Prevention (cdc) it is important to get regular pap smear tests at 21 or within three years one starts having sex.
